Maika

EST Studios, the fledgling Los Angeles-based finance, production and sales company, has acquired worldwide rights, excluding Vietnam, to Ham Tran’s Sundance title Maika.

The family sci-fi centres on a grieving young boy who encounters a new friend who appears to have come from a falling star. The film is inspired by the 1978 children’s TV show of the same name from the former Czechoslovakia. BHD Films has Vietnamese rights and has is scheduled a May 27 release.

Producers are Jenni Trang Le, Duy, Anderson Le, Francis Smith and Charlyn Ng, while Quang Binh Nguyen Phan, Bich Hien Ngo Thi and Francis Smith served as executive producers alongside BHD Films, the Cinema Department of Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, VieOn and IFA Media.

Tenten Wei and EST Studios’ new head of film and TV Juefang Zhang brokered the deal.

EST Studios co-founders Jaeson Ma and Eric Tu aim to champion premium film and episodic content from Asia and the company is planning an annual slate of 15 films.
