Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss and Mascha Halberstad’s Oink are among the eight additional titles that have been nominated for the upcoming European Film Awards, while the European Film Academy has also named Marco Bellocchio as the recipient of the award for European innovative storytelling.
The Good Boss premiered in San Sebastian in 2021, and stars Javier Bardem. The Spanish title was nominated for a record 20 Goya awards, winning six. It tells the story of the petty boss of an industrial scales factory, played by Bardem. The film has been nominated in the European comedy section, alongside Icelandic Locarno 2021 premiere Cop Secret (Leynilögga) and French Cannes 2021 premiere The Divide (La Fracture).
Mascha Halberstad’s feature directorial debut, Dutch-Belgian co-production Oink (Knor), has been nominated in the European animated feature category. The Berlinale premiere follows a nine-year-old girl whose grandfather gives her a pig named Oink, who she must protect from the local sausage-making competition.
Italian director Marco Bellocchio will be the guest of honour at the awards ceremony, and will receive the award for European innovative storytelling award for his mini-series, Exterior Night, which follows the the kidnapping and assassination of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades in 1978, a subject the filmmaker previously covered in 2003 feature Goodmorning, Night. His further credits include Berlinale 1991 Silver Bear winner La Condanna.
The full nominations will be named on November 8 and the European Film Awards will be presented on December 10 in Reykjavík, Iceland. Titles in the feature film selection and documentary film selection have already been announced, with six additional titles unveiled at the end of September.
