Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the Critics Choice field on 14 nominations including best picture, while Charlotte Wells’ British indie Aftersun earned three for actor Paul Mescal, young actress Frankie Corio and screenplay.
The Fablemans is next on 11 nods followed by The Banshees Of Inisherin and Babylon on nine apiece. Each earned best picture nods from the Critics Choice Association as well as directing recognition for Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh and Damien Chazelle, respectively.
Everything Everywhere All At Once directors the Daniels are also in the running for best director, a category that includes Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King and Sarah Polley for Women Talking – two filmmakers who were shut out of the Golden Globes category earlier this week.
Women Talking is the only film directed by a woman among the Critics Choice best picture contenders, which include Indian smash RRR and Top Gun: Maverick alongside the likes of TÁR and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh is again in contention for best actress in a field that includes Cate Blanchett for TÁR, Viola Davis for The Woman King, Danielle Deadwater for Till, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, and Margot Robbie for Babylon.
Best actor contenders besides Mescal are awards season frontrunner Brendan Fraser for The Whale, Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick – absent from the Golden Globes nominees earlier this week – Colin Farrell for The Banshees Of Inisherin, Austin Butler for Elvis, and Bill Nighy who is building momentum for Living after a Globes nod this week.
The foreign language nominees include all those recognised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as well as Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Mexican hopeful Bardo.
The 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards will be broadcast live on The CW from Los Angeles on January 15, 2023.
