Award-winning German-Turkish director Fatih Akin has signed a multi-year first-look deal with WarnerMedia for German and Turkish language movies and series for theatrical release, TV and for HBO Max.
It marks the US studio’s growing interest in local European content as it rolls out its HBO Max streaming service internationally.
WarnerMedia will take all global rights for any project it boards apart for theatrical films which will be dealt with on a project by project basis.
Akin’s recent credits include the upcoming feature Rhinegold; serial killer drama The Golden Glove, which debuted in competition in Berlin in 2019, and In The Fade, for which Diane Kruger won best actress in Cannes in 2017.
It is a continuation of the director’s longstanding relationship with WarnerMedia;The studio was a producer partner on In The Fade, The Golden Glove and Rhinegold.
”We know how important local content is to our audiences and together with Fatih, we want to produce some great German and Turkish language content,” said Hannes Heyelmann, EVP Programming EMEA at WarnerMedia.
