Seven awards granted to film venues in London.
Seven traditional and non-traditional film venues are to receive £3,000 ($5,000) each in order for them to broaden their programming as part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network.
Allocated by Film London, the Film Hub London’s Boost Awards will bring film-makers from countries including Canada, Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands and France to speak about their work at screening events in London.
Funding includes an expansion of A Nos Amours’ Chantal Akerman season, re-scoring of silent films in South London, Cutting East presenting Egyptian music documentary and a director Q&A, Open City Docs Fest’s retrospective of Israeli documentarian Avi Mograbi, the screening of a Canadian sci-fi film in a World War II bunker in Dalston and the screening of Dutch comedy Matterhorn with director Q&As around London, presented by LOCO.

A Nos Amours – Chantal Akerman: Expanded
Partnering with the ICA and JW3
Screening collective A Nos Amours’ will bring Belgian director Chantal Akerman to London for a retrospective of her work including screenings and seminars at the ICA Cinema and new Jewish arts venue JW3 in North West London.
Crystal Palace Festival Group – Secrets of Nature – Sounds Unseen
Partnering with Sydenham Arts Festival, Zanzibar nightclub and Apiary Studios
Crystal Palace Festival Group will present a series of ground-breaking silent films, Secrets of Nature (1903-1927), with a new live musical score at St. John the Evangelist Church in Upper Norwood and Zanzibar nightclub in Sydenham as part of the Sydenham Arts Festival, with a further screening at Apiary Studios in Hackney.
Elefest – Elefest Rescores
Partnering with Cinema Museum, Peckham and Nunhead Festival and Hackney Attic
Elephant and Castle-based Elefest will present two live rescores to Modern Times and The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. Performed by the Cabinet of Living Cinema and the McCarricks at the Cinema Museum during Elefest, they will then be seen at the Peckham and Nunhead Film Festival and Hackney Attic, subsequently with screenings at Shortwave and Lexi Cinema to be confirmed.
LOCO – LOCO Present Matterhorn
Partnering with JW3 and Anxiety UK Arts Festival
London Comedy Film Festival LOCO will present screenings of Dutch comedy Matterhorn with Q&As with director Diederick Ebbinge at JW3 and as part of Anxiety UK Arts Festival in South London.
London Borough of Tower Hamlets – Cutting East, Electro Chaabi
Partnering with Genesis Cinema, Clapham Picturehouse and Mosaic Rooms
Youth-led programme Cutting East will present Egyptian music documentary Electro Chaabi plus Q&A with director Hind Meddeb at a screening at the Genesis Cinema. The film will then screen at Clapham Picturehouse as part of its young documentary film-makers group and discussions are ongoing with Mosaic Rooms, a contemporary arts centre which presents progressive, non-sectarian creative voices from or connected to the Arab World or Arabic culture.
Open City Docs Fest – Avi Mograbi Retrospective
Partnering with the ICA and Hackney Picturehouse
Open City Docs Fest will bring award-winning Israeli documentarian Avi Mograbi to London to participate at a retrospective of his work at the ICA, Hackney Picturehouse and at Open City festival venues in Bloomsbury.
SCI-FI London Film Festival 2014 – Bunker 6
Partnering with The Bunker and Stratford Picturehouse
SCI-FI London are screening new Canadian film Bunker 6 with director Q&A at new venue The Bunker, a preserved World War II bunker in Dalston. The film will then screen at the Stratford Picturehouse, again with the director present for introduction and Q&A.
