South Korean sales company Finecut has announced a raft of Asian Film Market deals led by Kim Ki-duk’s controversial Moebius.
Moebius, which had to be cut by two and half minutes including scenes of incestuous sex before securing the greenlight for local release by the Korean Media Rating Board (KMRB), premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September.
Finecut has sold the film, described as the story “of a man who has grown up in a home wrecked by his father’s infidelity”, to Japan (King Records), Benelux (Contact Film) and Portugal (Films4You).
Moebius previously secured pre-sales with multiple territories that included Italy, Germany and ex-USSR before screening in Venice and Toronto.
King Records also previously distributed Kim’s Golden Lion-winner, Pieta.
Hong Sang-soo’s Our Sunhi, which won the Best Director Award at Locarno, sold to France (Les Films du Camelia) and Italy (Movies Inspired).
Movies Inspired also picked up Noh Young-seok’s Intruders, which received its world premiere at Toronto and screened in Busan. The company previously distributed films such as Moebius, Leo Carax’s Holy Motors and Hong’s Nobody’s Daughter Haewon and Like You Know It All.
Finecut also added sales on the hit thriller New World, which went to Hong Kong and Macau (i-Cable Entertainment), ex-USSR (Maywin Films), Australia and New Zealand (Madman Entertainment), and Thailand (MATV).
The film, starring Lee Jung-jae and Choi Min-shik, had formerly sold to a slew of territories including North America, France, Germany and Japan. It also recently closed a remake deal with Sony-Columbia Pictures.
In addition, the thriller Montage sold to Japan (New Select), Taiwan (Encore Film), Malaysia and Brunei (Hwa Yea Multimedia), and Thailand (MATV).
