Principal photography has begun on UK director Mahalia Belo’s dystopian drama The End We Start From, starring Jodie Comer, Joel Fry, Mark Strong, Gina McKee, Katherine Waterston, Nina Sosanya and Benedict Cumberbatch.
The Emmy award-winning Comer is also an executive producer on the feature, which is produced by Benedict Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch, Liza Marshall’s Hera Pictures, Anton and BBC Film.
A first image has been released from the film, above, in which Comer plays a new mother trying to get back home as environmental disaster submerges London in floods. It is adapted by Alice Birch from the novel by Megan Hunter.
The End We Start From is the debut feature for Belo, a Screen UK Star of Tomorrow in 2012. She has TV credits inluding The Long Song and Channel 4 film Ellen, for which she earned Bafta nomiantions.
The producers are Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland for SunnyMarch, Marshall for Hera Pictures, Amy Jackson and Sophie Hunter. The financiers are Anton, C2 Motion Picture Group, BBC Film and the BFI.
Comer was named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2016 and made her West End debut in Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie, which broke box office records for event cinema last weekend through National Theatre Live. Cumberbatch was a Star of Tomorrow in 2004, the inaugural edition.
