Focus Features has acquired international rights to The Lighthouse, the second feature from The Witch director Robert Eggers, in a deal struck with US production company A24.
Focus’ parent company Universal Pictures International will distribute the film internationally, with A24 handling the North American release.
The film will have its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) on Sunday, May 19.
The black-and-white film stars Willem Dafoe and Screen Star of Tomorrow 2005 Robert Pattinson, in a hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote New England island in the 1890s. Co-written by Eggers and his brother Max Eggers, it was shot exclusively on 35mm film.
RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira and Lourenço Sant’Anna, Parts & Labor’s Jay Van Hoy, and Youree Henley produced the film, with co-financing from A24 and New Regency.
The deal marks the latest collaboration between A24 and Focus, who previously teamed up on Eggers’ hit debut The Witch and Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated Lady Bird.
