EXCLUSIVE: Fortissimo Films has concluded a string of deals in key territories on its Sundance and Berlin title Love Is Strange, including the sale of UK rights to Will Clarke’s Altitude Films.
The critically-acclaimed film has also gone to Wild Bunch for Benelux, Rialto Distribution for Australia/New Zealand, Faliro House for Greece, Alpha Filmes for Brazil and Cinesky for international airlines.
It was previously announced during Sundance that Fortissimo had sold the film to Pretty Pictures for France.
At the end of the Sundance Film Festival, it was also announced the film’s producers and WME had sold it to Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) for North America, Germany and Scandinavia.
Directed and co-written by Ira Sachs, Love Is Strange is set to receive its international premiere in Berlin’s Panorama section on February 7.
The film stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as a gay couple who get legally married, after being together for 39 years, but are forced to live apart when the wedding becomes public and the main breadwinner in the relationship is fired from his job. Marisa Tomei and Cheyenne Jackson also star.
“These sales to powerhouse distributors from around the globe demonstrate a strong continuing demand for quality cinema that is timely and moving,” said Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner.
“What a fantastic start for this great film with it’s talented director, caring producers and fantastic cast. We are proud to be a part of bringing this film to an international audience and to be working with such a talented director as Ira Sachs.”
