French state film organization the CNC has appointed Lionel Bertinet as its new director of cinema, CNC president Dominique Boutonnat confirmed on Thursday.
Bertinet will officially assume the position on Monday, November 14, taking the reins from Magali Valente who stepped into a new role in October as technical advisor for culture in the French Prime Minister’s bureau.
Bertinet has held various positions at the CNC since his arrival in 2000, notably in the multimedia and technical industries department, where he was deputy director from 2007 to 2010, and then in the film department in various positions, notably since 2013 as deputy director in charge of distribution and theatrical release. He notably played a direct role in helping the CNC to execute its emergency plan for movie theatres during the pandemic.
Bertinet holds a degree in civil engineering from France’s prestigious Ecole des Mines in Nancy and a degree in film studies. He began his career at Admical, a corporate sponsorship company before his long CNC track.
Boutonnat said in a statement: “Lionel’s experience, acquired over more than 20 years at the CNC, has given him a transversal knowledge of the entire industry, its issues and its interlocutors: his vision and authority will be invaluable to us in supporting the transformation of the film industry in the years to come.”
