Cyrano

The French theatrical release of Joe Wright’s musical Cyrano will go ahead as planned on March 30, via the local branch of Universal Pictures International, Screen understands.

French media reported on Tuesday (8) that a PR connected to the promotional campaign had told journalists that the March 30 release had been cancelled and a digital release was yet to be set.

Some reports surmised that this was at the behest of makers MGM, following lacklustre performances at the box office in the UK and the US. The film has grossed more than $2.6m in the US since it opened on February 25 via United Artists Releasing.

UIP France did not return calls for confirmation on Wednesday (9) but the March 30 release dates remained on its consumer website.

However Screen understands via sources that the French March 30 release is still on track.

Cyrano is adapted from Erica Schmidt’s 2018 stage musical which in turn is inspired by French playwright Edmond Rostand’s 19th century classic ’Cyrano de Bergerac’. Peter Dinklage stars in the titular role.

There is curiosity in France over the English-language adaptation of the play, which has inspired numerous French productions including Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s Oscar-nominated1990 hit, for which Gerard Depardieu won best actor at Cannes and was also Oscar-nominated.
