New strands include pop-up events, a focus on Chile and Oscar nominated Hollywood films from 1939.

The Glasgow Film Festival has unveiled its line-up of strands for its 10th edition, which will run Feb 20 to March 2.

New strands include Pop-Up Cinema, comprising “boutique screenings and cinematic experiences” in a range of unusual locations.

Its builds on last year’s festival, where The Warriors screened in the Glasgow Subway system; Jaws and Dead Calm were shown in the cargo hold of the Tall Ship Glenlee; silent classic The Passion of Joan of Arc was accompanied by a live soprano soundtrack at Glasgow Cathedral; and Calamity Jane was played at the Grand Ole Opry country and western saloon.

At the 2014 festival, there will be a themed pop-up event on every night of the Festival apart from the opening and closing galas. Selected events will be announced next month.

New strand 1939: Hooray for Hollywood! will celebrate a golden year for cinema, when 365 Hollywood films were released, 80 million tickets a week were sold, and the Best Picture Oscar nominees were Gone With The Wind, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Dark Victory, Love Affair, Goodbye Mr Chips, Ninotchka, Mr Smith Goes To Washington, Of Mice and Men, and The Wizard of Oz.

GFF 2014 will screen all those films, beginning with Gone With The Wind at the Glasgow Film Theatre, which opened as The Cosmo in 1939 before undergoing a makeover and rebrand in 1974.

The festival’s country focus this year is on Chile, where filmmaking has recently been energised by two large international successes, No starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Gloria, for which Paulina Garcia won best actress at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.

The CineChile strand will draw attention to the work coming from the Latin American country such as The Illiterate (Las Analfabetas), Crystal Fairy, The Quispe Sisters (Las Ninas Quispe), The Summer of Flying Fish (El Verano de los Peces Voladores), Things the Way They Are (La Cosas Como Son) and Violet Went to Heaven (Violeta Se Fue a los Cielos).

Glasgow celebrates its 10th edition next year. The festival first launched in 2005 and last year recorded more than 39,000 admissions to 368 events, including seven world premieres, 57 UK premieres and guests such as Joss Whedon, John C Reilly, Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.

GFF co-director Allan Hunter said: “The Festival has grown and developed in ways that we couldn’t have imagined in 2005.

“We take the bond of trust with our audiences very seriously and look forward to presenting them with a 2014 programme that matches their expectations of what a Film Festival should be and how a special anniversary should be celebrated.”

GFF is funded by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Creative Scotland, Event Scotland and the BFI Film Festival Fund.
