The Golden Globes

Tuesday’s 80th Annual Golden Globes live broadcast drew 6.3m people – the second-lowest audience in the show’s history, according to numbers released by Nielsen.

Only the 2008 ceremony – which took place during a writers’ strike and delivered a 6m audience – has generated a smaller audience. The 2021 mid-pandemic telecast drew 6.9m. Last year’s show was held behind closed doors amid the Hollywood boycott stemming from the 2021 Los Angeles Times Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) exposé.

NBC skipped the 2021 ceremony and returned to broadcast this year’s event, which earned a meagre 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic targeted by advertisers. That compares to 1.5m for 2021’s telecast.

Viewership data including the streaming platform Peacock and other digital platforms will be released after a three-day delay.

The HFPA staged its show on a Tuesday instead of the usual Sunday slot. NBC can earn significantly larger primtime advertising yield from Sunday night American football, which according to reports can bring in viewership in the 20m range.

However NBC ruled Tuesday night primetime on the East Coast, drawing more viewers than CBS’s 6.1m for its FBI trilogy, which did not air on the West Coast at the same time.

On Wednesday Netflix and SAG-AFTRA announced a multi-year deal for the service to broadcast the SAG Awards starting in 2024.
