Documentary follows Louganis’ return to diving as a mentor to the US team.
Director Cheryl Furjanic (Sync or Swim) and producer Will Sweeney (The Royal Tenenbaums) are filming during the London Olympic games for their new documentary Back On Board Greg Louganis.
The film will follow Louganis [pictured] returning to diving as a mentor to the US team, after a 22-year break.
The filmmakers have been shooting with Louganis since May 2011 and the film will be readied for a 2013 release.
The filmmakers said: “The film reveals Louganis’ evolution from childhood diving prodigy to Olympic champion, and from pioneering openly gay athlete with HIV to a sometimes forgotten sports icon.”
“Greg’s return to diving after feeling unwelcome for so long gave us a natural way to tell his unique story and explore his enduring legacy,” said Sweeney. “With Greg’s new role as a mentor and the success so far of the USA Diving team — it gives us all the ingredients for a great American comeback story that everyone will cheer on.”
“I see this film as an opportunity to reintroduce a true pioneer to the American public. Greg has seen life’s high highs and low lows — we can all learn a lot from his story,” added Furjanic.
The film is being partially financed with a Kickstarter campaign.
