Elle, It’s Only The End Of The World and Julieta were the big hits from Cannes 2016.

Elle

With Cannes over for another year, Screen revisited some of last year’s Cannes titles and assessed how they performed at the box office in major European markets (see below), as part of our investigation into how foreign language films perform in the UK.

The figures show that Pedro Almodovar’s Julieta was the most succesful at the box office, making more than $1 million in four regions, including $5.5m in France. Julieta was also one of only two films that broke the million dollar barrier in the UK, along with Elle.

France was perhaps unsurprisingly the biggest market for Cannes films, with Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only The End Of The World earning more than $7 million in the territory. Cristian Mungiu’s Graduation was the only film on our list to make less than $1 million in France.
