Hulu has ordered Searchlight Television’s Spanish-language limited series La Máquina straight to series, reuniting Y Tu Mama Tambien stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna on screen.
Marco Ramirez (Daredevil) is the showrunner and Gabriel Ripstein (600 Miles) will direct all eight episodes of the story about an aging boxer (Bernal) whose crafty manager (Luna) secures him one last shot at a title. However in order to make it to fight night they must navigate a mysterious underworld force.
Gerardo Gatica, Leandro Halperin and Adam Fishbach are producing the series alongside Bernal and Luna via their La Corriente del Golfo. La Máquina will stream on Disney’s DTC (direct to consumer) platforms as a Hulu Original in the US.
Bernal recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old and his film credits include The Motorcycle Diaries, Wasp Network, Museo, Ema and Amores Perros, In TV he has starred in Mozart In The Jungle and can currently be seen in Station Eleven. Coming up are a Disney+ Halloween Special for Marvel and Amazon’s Cassandro.
Luna’s credits include Milk, Wander Darkly, If Beale Street Could Talk, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Book Of Life. His TV credits include Todo Va A Estar Bien, Pan y Circo and the first two seasons of Narcos: Mexico. He will soon star in the Star Wars series Andor and is in the voice cast of animated feature DC League of Super-Pets.
The recently launched Searchlight Television’s first production The Dropout in conjunction with 20th Television was nominated for six Emmy Awards. The companies are also producing the upcoming Hulu Original variety series History Of The World, Part II, the follow up to the classic Mel Brooks comedy film.
