Film Bazaar, the South Asia film project market held in India (November 20-24), has unveiled the selection of titles it will showcase that are seeking film festivals, world sales, distribution partners and finishing funds.
The Film Bazaar Recommends sidebars of Viewing Room and Work-in-Progress Lab selection received “a record number of submissions” according to organisers of the industry platform, which took place online for two editions during the pandemic.
The Viewing Room at the NFDC Film Bazaar Goa presents films from India and South Asia, which are recently completed or in post-production. A total of 247 films will be presented in the Viewing Room, of which 170 films are feature length; 104 are debut features; and 91 films are in-progress or not yet complete.
Film Bazaar Recommends is a curated section of films from all the submissions and comprises 20 titles, all of which have yet to receive their world premiere. These along with two mid-length films and eight shorts will be invited to pitch at Film Bazaar Goa.
They include Agra, an India-France feature by Kanu Behl, whose Titli played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2014; Sultana’s Dream, a Spain-Germany-India animation by Isabel Herguera; and Joram by Devashish Makhija, whose features Bhonsle and Ajji premiered at Busan in 2018 and 2017 respecitvely.
Film Bazaar has also selected projects for its Work-in-Progress Lab, giving filmmakers the opportunity to screen a rough cut of their films to a panel of international advisors, which include a film festival director, a film critic, producers and editors, with the aim of helping the filmmaker achieve an accomplished final cut of the film. The Work-in-Progress Lab is open only for fiction features aiming for a theatrical release.
Films selected for the lab in recent years include Natesh Hegde’s Pinyao winner Pedro; Locarno selection Shankar’s Fairies by Irfana Majumdar; Sundance title Fire in the Mountains by Ajitpal Singh; Toronto selection Paka (River of Blood) by Nitin Lukose; and Busan winner Shivamma by Jai Shankar.
