iQiyi International, the Singapore-based international division of Chinese streamer iQiyi, has unveiled its first Korean original production, My Roommate Is A Gumiho (working title).
Co-produced with leading Korean TV producers Studio Dragon and JTBC Studio, the romantic horror is based on popular Korean webtoon Living Together and written by Baek Sun-woo and Choi Bo-rim (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim).
Directed by Nam Sung-woo (Kkondae Intern), the series will star Jang Ki Yong and Hyeri.
The story revolves around a fox spirit or ‘gumiho’ who has spent centuries trying to attain human form and is forced to live with a college student who has accidentally swallowed the pearl that will help him complete his quest.
“We’re privileged to work with some of Korea’s greatest storytellers, Baek Sun-woo, Choi Bo-rim and Nam Sung-woo, to turn this fantastical tale into a high-quality series,” said iQiyi vice president, international business, Kuek Yu-Chuang. “This is a first step in the long journey of bringing more beloved Asian stories to a global audience.”
The show will stream exclusively on iQiyi outside Korea in 2021 on the streamer’s international app and website (www.iq.com), which has subtitles in English and several other languages.
Kuek joined iQiyi in June 2020 to drive the streamer’s international expansion, which has also involved the launch of the international app and website, appointment of country heads in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines and a slate of Southeast Asian productions and acquisitions.
