Iranian actor Taraneh Alidoosti is to be released from prison after posting bail, following her arrest on December 17 of last year on charges of “spreading falsehoods” about the protest movement that has spread throughout Iran.
Alidoosti is a frequent collaborator of Asghar Farhadi and starred in his Oscar-winning film The Salesman. Her lawyer Zahra Minooei tweeted about the temporary release of Alidoosti earlier today (January 4): “Today, my client Ms. Taraneh Alidoosti will be released from Evin Prison after posting bail.”
Alidoosti’s mother, Nadereh Hakim Elahi, also confirmed her release via an Instagram story.
Over 600 artists around the world signed an online petition calling for the release of Alidoosti, including Mark Ruffalo, Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz, Juliette Binoche, Alfonso Cuaron, Ken Loach Emma Thompson, Jason Momoa, Jeremy Irons, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Ian McKellen and Isabelle Huppert. Film festivals including Cannes, Belinale and Tribeca have also condemned her arrest.
Farhadi also published a statement at the time of her arrest, that said: “I stand with Taraneh and demand her release alongside that of my other fellow cineastes Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof and all the other less-known prisoners whose only crime is the attempt for a better life.”
