Jacques Audiard will direct the musical comedy Emilia Perez starring Spanish trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón which The Veterans and CAA Media Finance will introduce to buyers in Cannes next week.
Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez are in talks to join the cast on the story about Rita, a woman at a large firm in Mexico who is asked to help feared cartel boss Juan ‘Little Hands’ Del Monte retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being.
Cannes regular Audiard and Thomas Bidegain co-wrote the screenplay and collaborated on The Sisters Brothers, Dheepan, Rust And Bone and A Prophet. Audiard brought Paris, 13th District to Cannes Competition last year and won the Palme d’Or with Dheepan in 2015.
Gascón’s screen credits include El Cura Y El Veleno and Nosotros Los Nobles. Saldana stars in the Avatar and Guardians Of The Galaxy franchises, while Gomez’s roles include Spring Breakers, The Dead Don’t Die and A Rainy Day In New York.
Production on Emilia Perez is scheduled to begin in autumn. Producers are Why Not Productions, Page 114 and Pimentia Film, and Library Pictures International is the financier.
