Jane Campion boosted her chances of an Oscar nomination as she claimed the second Directors Guild Of America (DGA) nod of her career for Netflix’s The Power Of The Dog in the main feature category on Thursday (27).
Campion earned her first DGA nod for The Piano back in 1994 and becomes the 11th woman to receive a nomination after Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell made history last year when two women were nominated in the same category for the first time. Zhao won the award en route to her Oscar success.
The remaining four slots in the influential DGA’s feature category went to male directors from legacy studios: Paul Thomas Anderson for MGM/UAR’s Licorice Pizza; Kenneth Branagh for Focus Features’ Belfast; Steven Spielberg for 20th Century Studios’ West Side Story; and Denis Villeneuve for Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune.
Spielberg bears the distinction of having been nominated for a DGA award in every decade since the 1970s. He has been nominated 11 times before and is the only winner from the current crop of nominees, claiming awards for Saving Private Ryan in 1999, Schindler’s List in 1994, and The Color Purple in 1986.
Anderson earns his second nomination after There Will Be Blood in 2008 and Villeneuve was previously nominated for Arrival in 2017. This is Branagh’s first DGA nomination.
Women secured four out of six nods in the first-time feature directing category including Tatiana Huezo for Netflix’s Oscar-shortlisted Mexican drama Prayers For The Stolen – the documentary feature filmmaker’s first fictional film. She sits alongside fellow Netflix nominees Maggie Gyllenhaal for The Lost Daughter and Rebecca Hall for Passing, as well as Emma Seligman for Shiva Baby (Utopia).
Lin-Manuel Miranda added another nod for Netflix with Tick, Tick… Boom! and Michael Sarnoski is in contention for Pig (Neon).
Winners will be announced at the 74th Annual DGA Awards on March 12 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
