The American Film Institute (AFI) on Wednesday unveiled its list of top 10 films and television shows of 2019, with the Netflix pair of The Irishman and Marriage Story making the cut alongside Warner Bros’ The Joker and A24’s The Farewell in the feature film category.
The other films are Universal’s 1917, Fox Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit, Lionsgate/MRC’s Knives Out, the Columbia Pictures pair of Little Women and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, and Warner Bros’ Richard Jewell.
The 10 outstanding television programmes of the year which, as with the features, the AFI has deemed “culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image”, include HBO’s Chernobyl, Game Of Thrones, Watchmen and Succession, and Netflix’s The Crown and When They See Us.
AFI also recognised Parasite and Fleabag with a Special Award “designated for a work of excellence outside the Institute’s criteria for American film and television.”
