Lionsgate said on Monday (May 9) Jonathan Levine will direct Jennifer Grey in the Dirty Dancing sequel, which as previously announced he will produce.
Screen was the first to report Helen Lee Kim and the sales team at Lionsgate International will launch pre-sales on the Croisette 35 years after the 1987 original about romance at a summer dance camp in which Grey starred opposite the late Patrick Swayze.
Levine, the director of Long Shot and Warm Bodies, is producing through his Megamix alongside producing partner Gillian Bohrer. Production is anticipated to start later this year for a 2024 release.
Sources said the sequel will be a coming-of-age story combining various musical genres including 1990s hip-hop. The studio said Dirty Dancing is the best-selling library title in its history.
Lionsgate International’s Cannes sales slate includes Hunger Games prequel The Ballard Of Songbirds And Snakes.
