FEBRUARY 5 UPDATE: Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle reclaimed top spot from last weekend’s opener Maze Runner: The Death Cure, adding $10.9m for $352.6m in a typically muted Super Bowl Weekend.
Fox third Maze Runner switched places following a 58% slide on $10.5m for $40m, while Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig’s ghost story Winchester starring Helen Mirren debuted in third place via Lionsgate / CBS Films on $9.3m.
Fox Searchlight’s heavyweight awards contenders The Shape Of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri continued their impressive runs. The former expanded by 487 theatres to 2,341, slipping one place to number nine on $4.4m for $44.7m after 10 weekends.
Three Billboards climbed up one slot to number 11 after expanding by 269 theatres in 1,726 and added $3m for $41.8m after 13.
Controversial Bollywood release Padmaavat fell 46% and three places to number 14 on $2.4m for $8.9m through Viva Pictures Distribution.
The film has stirred controversy in India for its depiction of a romantic dream sequence involving a Hindu queen and an invading Muslim king.
SPC delivered a so-so launch for Sebastian Lelio’s Chilean Oscar nominee A Fantastic Woman starring Daniela Vega opened at number 35 on $64,241 in five for a $12,848 average.
Box office for the top 12 amounted to $71.2m, down 35.6% on last weekend and down 13.4% on the comparable session in 2017.
This week’s wide releases are: Universal’s erotic romance series finale Fifty Shades Freed with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan; Peter Rabbit through Sony; and Clint Eastwood thriller The 15:17 To Paris through Warner Bros.
