Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion has become the third pandemic release to cross $1bn worldwide after reaching the milestone on Thursday (September 22).
The adventure tentpole currently ranks second for the year behind Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick and stands at $624m internationally and $376m in North America.
Tom Cruise and friends have produced $158m in China where the film ranks as the biggest import of 2022 so far and the third highest-grossing Hollywood film of the pandemic.
Colin Trevorrow’s film is the seventh Universal title to cross $1bn at the global box office and the third in the Jurassic World franchise to do so, pushing the cumulative franchise tally to $6.02bn.
Last month Universal’s combined 2022 releases pushed past the $3bn global mark, which no studio has done since 2019. Other notable releases include Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru, The Black Phone from Blumhouse, DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys, and Jordan Peele’s Nope.
Upcoming titles from Universal include Bros, the first gay rom-com from a major studio; Ticket To Paradise starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts; awards hopeful and #MeToo drama She Said; Steven Spielberg’s TIFF hit and People’s Choice Awards winner The Fabelmans; and DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.
The Focus Features titles include Tar starting Venice Coppa Volpi winner and Oscar contender Cate Blanchett; and James Gray’s Cannes premiere Armageddon Time.
