Netflix led the 2021 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) 2021 with 30 nods on Thursday (February 4), as British stars Vanessa Kirby, Carey Mulligan, Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, and Gary Oldman earned recognition in the lead acting categories.
After receiving little love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) yesterday, Minari and Da 5 Bloods, which was shut out at the Globes, each earned three nods alongside Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial Of The Chicago 7.
Each of those films and One Night In Miami made it on to the ensemble cast list, bolstering their Oscar best picture prospects.
Chadwick Boseman earned two posthumous individual acting nods for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, and became the first person to earn four film nominations overall including ensemble cast for the two features.
Bulgarian breakout Maria Bakalova secured supporting actress recognition for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, while her co-star in that film, Sacha Baron Cohen, got a supporting actor nod for The Trial Of The Chicago 7.
Minari’s Steven Yeun made it on to the lead actor list and joins Ahmed (Sound Of Metal), Hopkins (The Father), Oldman (Mank) and the late Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) in the lead acting category.
Youn Yuh-Jung takes her place among the supporting actress nominees alongside Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), Olivia Colman (The Father), Helena Zengel (News Of The World), and Bakalova. Amanda Seyfried is the surprise omission for Mank.
Minari also earned a nod for ensemble cast as did Da 5 Bloods. Spike Lee’s film picked up a supporting actor nomination for Boseman. As with the Globes nominations, Jared Leto is the surprise inclusion for The Little Things, while once again Paul Raci misssed out for Sound Of Metal.
Andra Day missed out in the lead actress category after the United States vs Billie Holiday star landed a Golden Globe nod this week. Instead Amy Adams surprise when she earned a place on the list for Hillbilly Elegy, alongside Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Kirby (Pieces Of A Woman), and Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).
In the TV categories, Michaela Coel earned a nod in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for I May Destroy You, which was shut out by the HFPA.
The Crown landed five nods including ensemble drama and three cast members – Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, and Emma Corrin – are in contention for female dramatic actor alongside Laura Linney and Julia Garner for Ozark.
The 27th annual SAG Awards will take place virtually on April 4.
