Margot Robbie has claimed in an interview that Disney is not moving ahead on a “female-led” spin-off of its $4.5bn action franchise Pirates Of The Caribbean .

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie told Vanity Fair.

At time of writing Disney had not responded for a comment. Last week CEO Bob Chapek told executives of impending cost-cuts including a review of content and marketing spend, as well as lay-offs and a hiring freeze.

Robbie had been planning to reunite on the project with her Birds Of Prey writer Christina Hodson  Christina Hodson. The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise launched in 2003 and starred Johnny Depp.

Robbie is among the cast on David O. Russell’s Amsterdam and next month can be seen opposite Brad Pitt in Damien Chazelle’s awards hopeful Babylon, which Paramount is distributing in the US, UK and select territories.

The Australian star plays the lead role in Warner Bros’ summer 2023 tentpole Barbie and is in pre-production on an Ocean’s Eleven prequel, both of which she is producing through her Lucky Chap Entertainment.

Robbie earned Oscar nominations for I, Tonya (lead) in 2018 and Bombshell (supporting) in 2020 and her credits include The Wolf Of Wall Street and Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.
