Romantic comedy veteran Meg Ryan is returning to the genre with What Happens Later, which she will direct, and star in opposite David Duchovny for HanWay Films.
The film is based on Steven Dietz’s play Shooting Star, about a couple reunited for the first time in decades when they are snowed in at an airport overnight.
HanWay Films has boarded international sales and will debut the title at the market in Cannes. Bleecker Street has acquired US rights, and is planning a 2023 theatrical release.
The film is produced by Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams through US company Ten Acre Films; with producers Laura D. Smith and Kristin Mann. Executive producers are Kerri Elder and Blake Elder of Rockhill Studios; with Andrew Karpen and Kent Sanderson for Bleecker Street.
What Happens Later will be Ryan’s second feature as director following 2015 war drama Ithaca.
