UK sales agent Mister Smith Entertainment has boarded US filmmaker Larin Sullivan’s feature directorial debut The Young King, starring Michael Shannon, Kiersey Clemons and Barbie Ferreira.
Mister Smith will launch international sales at the American Film Market (AFM, November 1-6), with WME Independent handling North American rights.
Set amid the drag king scene of 1990s Las Vegas, the comedy drama sees Clemons star as an aspiring drag king who heads to Las Vegas to reconnect with her estranged dad, played by Shannon, and to make her debut at America’s biggest drag king venue.
It is produced by Los Angeles-based outfit Corporate Witchcraft’s Kim Bailey and Isabel Marden, in addition to Clemons.
The film will start production in the first quarter of 2023 in Las Vegas.
Justin Tranter, who has worked on A Star Is Born, will write original music for the film, and is the executive music producer.
The project has received support from GLAAD ( Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), Sundance Institute, IFP’s (Independent Film Project) Project Forum, Tribeca Film Institute and Inside Out Toronto.
Sullivan began her screen career on the programming team at the Sundance Film Festival and in the writer’s room of TV series The L Word.
