Director Michael Winterbottom is making a six-part drama, Fall Of The God Of Cars, about former Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn.
Winterbottom’s Revolution Films is collaborating with Fremantle, Passenger and Anonymous Content on the series, which tells the story of the Brazilian-Lebanese businessman who was arrested in Japan and one year later orchestrated his own escape to Beirut, hidden in a music case on a private jet.
The series is written and directed by Winterbottom. Tony Shalhoub (Monk, The Marvellous Miss Maisel) stars as Ghosn.
The series was originally developed by Winterbottom, Alfonso Cuaron, and Anonymous Content. Richard Brown is executive producing for Passenger and Fremantle, Melissa Parmenter is exec producing for Revolution and Violaine Etienne serves as executive producer for Anonymous Content. David Levine and Garrett Kemble will oversee the project on behalf of Anonymous Content.
Ghosn has already been the subject of a number of documentaries, while French actor François Cluzet has previously been attached to star in another drama series about him.
Fremantle recently partnered with Brown and Winterbottom on the Sky Original drama This England, and acquired Passenger in December 2022. The production company sits within Fremantle’s Global Drama division which is led by CEO of Global Drama, Christian Vesper. Fremantle also has an exclusive first-look deal with Revolution Films.
Winterbottom said: “Carlos Ghosn was a superstar of the car industry, the first person ever to have simultaneously been CEO of two Fortune 500 companies. It is wonderful to have Tony Shalhoub on board to play this complex character.”
Winterbottom’s credits include Welcome to Sarajevo, Wonderland and 24 Hour Party People through to The Trip, Red Riding, Everyday, The Road to Guantanamo, The Unloved and Go Now.
