Miguel Gomes, Charlotte Sieling

Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes and Danish director Charlotte Sieling have both received co-production support for projects from Eurimages’ third round of funding for 2022.

Some €6.7m sum has been awarded to 24 feature projects including four documentary and three animation films.

Gomes has received €500,000 for Grand Tour, about an engaged couple travelling from Burma to China in 1918. The film is a co-production between Portugal’s Uma Pedra No Sapato, Italy’s Vivo Film, France and Germany.

Also receiving €500,000 is Titanic Ocean, the feature debut from Greek director Konstantina Kotzamani whose shorts have been screened at Cannes (Limbo, 2016), Berlin (Washingtonia, 2014) and Locarno (Yellow Fieber, 2015).  Titanic Ocean is a sci-fi about a boarding school for mermaids in training. The film has previously participated in Torino FeatureLab, Venice Gap-Financing, IFFAM Project Market, and the Tokyo Gap Financing market.

Seiling, who is best known for 2021’s Margrete – Queen Of The North, received €420,000 for her upcoming project Way Home which is a Denmark-Norway-Germany co-production.

Further recipients include Emmanuel Finkiel’s Mariana’s Room which scooped up €475,000 in Eurimages funding. The French director, whose last film Memoir Of War was nominated for eight Cesars in 2017, has adapted Aaron Appelfeld’s novel set on the border of Ukraine and Poland in 1943. Mariana’s Room is produced by France’s Cinéfrance Studios and Curiosa Films with Israels’ Metro Communications and Sunshine Films, Belgium’s Tarantula and Hungary’s Proton.

Over half of the 24 projects selected were directed or co-directed by women.

At the meeting to decide the awarded projects, the creation of the New Lab Awards was also approved and will aim to celebrate established and emerging non-conventional filmmakers. The call-out will be launched in February 2023 for 2024-26.
