Cannes TV market MIPTV is to move online for a second consecutive year due to the ongoing virus crisis.
The 58th edition of the market, meant to take place in Cannes from April 12-16, 2021, will now run virtually across those dates. It will also encompass sidebar events MIPFormats and MIPDoc.
However, organiser Reed Midem still plan to host content market MIPCOM as a physical event from October 11-14, 2021. A fourth edition of Canneseries is also set to take place in the Palais des Festivals from April 9-14.
Reed Midem said the decision to move MIPTV online was due to “ongoing uncertainty over Covid-19”.
However, if conditions improve sufficiently early next year, the organisation said it would look at holding “a small, in-person screenings-based event” in Cannes during the MIPTV week to complement the digital edition.
Jerome Delhaye, director of Reed Midem’s entertainment division, said: “We have learned a great deal in this extraordinary year. Two points stand out very clearly across all of Reed Midem’s events: the need for clear and, when possible, timely decision making, so our partners around the globe can plan for the year ahead; and the need to get back to doing business face-to-face.
“That is why we are confirming plans now for the two biggest annual events in the television calendar. We remain especially optimistic about the second half of 2021 and as such we are focussing all our energies on bringing everyone back to Cannes in October for the business reunion that the industry is so eagerly awaiting.”
The French Riviera resort has lost close to an estimated $1bn in revenue since March due to the cancellation of dozens of physical trade events and conferences in the city due to coronavirus.
