Toronto-based Mongrel International arrives at AFM with four sales titles led by Ann-Marie Fleming’s sci-fi thriller Can I Get A Witness to star Sandra Oh, and Kyle Armstrong’s horror thriller Hands That Bind.
Can I Get a Witness takes place in the near future when 50-year-olds are expected to die in order to save the planet while teenage artists are ordered to document their demise. Eric Mussolum and Jayme Pfahl are producing the project, which is in development.
Hands That Bind follows a farmer who struggles to provide for his family as a darkness settles over the community and mysterious events occur: cattle mutilations, drought, a missing teenager, paranoia, and unexplained lights in the sky.
Paul Sparks, Bruce Dern, Will Oldham, Nicholas Campbell, Landon Liboiron and Susie Kent star in the completed film. Blake McWilliam is producing. World rights are available except Canada, where Mongrel Media will distribute.
Stealing Is Bad to star Nick Stahl and Kevin Pollak centres on an ambitious teenager who befriends a middle-aged ex-convict and plans a heist at the fast-food restaurant where they work. Jason Lapeyre will direct and Juliette Hagopian produces the crime thriller, which is in development.
Sam McGlynn’s 1989 is a completed comedy and follows party animal Dean Murdoch as he blasts back to 1989. Paul Spence writes the screenplay and stars. Producers are Kyle Irving and Paul Spence. The project is in development.
“Our 2022 AFM line-up is an eclectic mix of genre with highly original storytelling,” said Mongrel co-president Andrew Frank. “We know how critical cast is in the marketplace, and our three films in development already have key cast attached. Our finished film, Hands That Bind, has a stellar cast with Bruce Dern and Paul Sparks.”
