A location scout has been found dead in rural Mexico while scouting for Season 4 of Narcos, the Netflix crime series about the drug wars.
Carlos Muñoz Portal, 37, was found dead on Monday in a car riddled with bullets in the Mexican state of Temascalapa.
The news was first reported in Spanish national newspaper El Pais on Saturday. The location of the crime scene is close to Hidalgo, a state notorious for its high death count.
In a statement Netflix said, “We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family. The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate.”
Season 3 of the acclaimed show debuted last weekend and centres on Colombia’s Cali Cartel following the death of Pablo Escobar at the end of Season Two.
Speaking to Screen earlier this year, Narcos showrunner Eric Newman indicated the fourth season would switch the action from Colombia to Mexico.
“That seems to be the way the wind is blowing,” Newman said. “But I can neither confirm or deny it.”
