‘NAZA’

Neon has joined The Guardian, Mk2, James Wilson and Jonathan Glazer on NAZA and struck a deal to become US distributor.

The company will work with the filmmakers to expand the documentary’s footprint. Until now the film has been self-distributed and opened on September 30 in 85 theatres across 30 cities. To date it has grossed just shy of $886,000.

At time of writing, Neon had not elaborated on the expansion plan. Mk2 has secured theatrical distribution in more than 50 countries.

Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s film premiered in Venice where it won the special jury prize, and went on to win the audience award in San Sebastian and screen at New York Film Festival. Neon will support the campaign during awards season, where the film has already made waves, garnering  three Critics Choice Documentary Awards and a place on the DOC NYC’s shortlist.

The filmmakers interviewed 24 Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers over three years who bear witness to the killing of Palestinians, including civilians, in their homes and apartments in Gaza. “Naza “is Israeli military slang for collateral deaths in airstrikes. Abraham and Szor are two of the four co-directors of Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land.

Neon called the film “an extraordinary work of art and eyewitness testimony that stands alongside landmark documentaries like Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour and Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act Of Killing”.

The documentary is produced by The Guardian with Wilson’s JW Films in association with Placeholder Films and Unseen Hand. Glazer serves as executive producer.  Neon negotiated the deal with Mk2 Films.
