In the biggest on-site North American acquisition of a TIFF festival title this year, Neon has acquired North American rights to Platform selection How To Blow Up A Pipeline.
Daniel Goldhaber directed the story, based on Andreas Malm’s manifesto tackling the climate crisis, about environmental activists who sabotage a pipeline. The film contains thriller and heist elements.
Deal flow remains slow at the festival, where many films already have distribution in place and studios and streamers in particular are enjoying a strong presence.
The cast comprises Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, Irene Bedard and Olive Jane Lorraine star.
Lyrical Media and Spacemaker jointly financed the film. Isa Mazzei, Goldhaber, Barer, David Grove Churchill Viste, and Adam Wyatt Tate served as producers alongside production company Chrono alongside Alex Black and Alex Hughes. Jon Rosenberg, Riccardo Maddalosso, Sasha Lane, Forrest Goodluck, Jordan Sjol, Natalie Sellers, Eugene Kotlyarenko served as executive producers.
Neon’s Jeff Deutchman and Mason Speta brokered the deal with CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.
The distribution and production company has four films premiering at TIFF including Laura Poitras’s Venice Golden Lion winner All The Beauty And The Bloodshed, Brett Morgan’s David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream, Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner Triangle Of Sadness, and Kore-eda’s Broker.
On Monday Neon announced Asif Kapadia’s upcoming documentary 2073 in partnership with Double Agent and Film4.
