Netflix has reportedly given a two-season order to The Politician, a one-hour comedy series from prolific writer-producer Ryan Murphy.
Broadway award-winner Ben Platt will star in the title role and Barbra Streisand and Gwyneth Paltrow are said to be in negotiations to join the cast.
Murphy will work on the project with Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk, his co-creators on Golden Globe-winning musical dramedy series Glee. Fox 21 TV Studios will produce under Murphy’s deal with parent 20th Century Fox.
The series will follow a California politician through a different election campaign each season, with musical numbers featuring in some episodes. Murphy is expected to direct the pilot episode.
The series, said to have ended up at Netflix after a round of bidding that also involved Amazon and Hulu, would be Murphy’s second for the streaming giant, after Ratched, an upcoming drama based on a character from classic feature One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
Murphy’s other current series include American Horror Story, Feud, Pose and American Crime Story, all for Fox’s FX cable channel, and 9-1-1, for the Fox broadcast network. He also created American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck.
The producer’s deal with 20th Century Fox expires later this year and Murphy said recently that he has not yet made a decision about whether to renew or look for a new deal elsewhere.
