Netflix is to release Indian revenge thriller Thar this summer, marking its latest collaboration with star and producer Anil Kapoor.
The streaming giant has teamed with Anil Kapoor Film Company on the film as it works to increase its presence in India’s highly competitive streaming market.
Thar marks the feature directorial debut of Raj Singh Chaudhary, who also wrote the script. Set in the 1980s, it centres on a man who moves to the city of Pushkar for a job but also to avenge his past. This role is played by Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor, and is their second time on screen together after 2020’s AK vs AK – also released by Netflix. The cast also includes Fatima Sana Shaikh and Satish Kaushik.
While AKFC Network and Netflix are long standing creative partners, Thar is the first film on which the two have collaborated.
Kapoor said of the upcoming feature: “The genre itself - a noir thriller set in Rajasthan that pays tribute to the genre of the classic Western - is a first for Indian cinema and audiences… As an actor and a producer, I have always strived to push the envelope and disrupt the status quo with innovative content. Thar is a manifestation of this obsession and I’m thrilled to have a partner as supportive and collaborative as Netflix to take this story as far and wide as it can go.”
Netflix previously teamed with AKFC Network on TV drama series Selection Day and the streamer has been growing its original Indian content with features such as Haseen Dillruba and Raat Akeli Hai and series including Aranyak and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein.
According to reports, Netflix ranks third among streamers in the country after leader Disney Plus Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video, and cut its subscription fees in December in a bid to grow its market share.
