Netflix has closed a deal with Skydance and Spyglass to reimagine the Spy Kids franchise and has set original creator and director Robert Rodriguez to reprise his role.
Rodriguez will write, direct and produce the next film, which will introduce a new family of spies. The project marks his second family film with Netflix following 2020 action film We Can Be Heroes.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce for Skydance, which will oversee development and production. Elizabeth Avellan and Racer Max will also produce.
Gary Barber of Spyglass, which owns the Spy Kids franchise, will serve as executive produce with Peter Oillataguerre.
Spy Kids launched in 2001 and combined with three follow-ups through 2011 for more than $550m at the worldwide box office.
In addition to Spy Kids, Skydance’s slate with Netflix includes the upcoming Heart Of Stone starring Gal Gadot, The Adam Project starring Ryan Reynolds which debuted on March 11, The Old Guard and 6 Underground.
