‘Nomadland’

Nomadland picked up its second and third awards in three days as it won best feature and the IFP Gotham Audience Award at the 30th annual Gotham Awards on Monday (January 11).

Searchlight Pictures’ drama directed by Chloé Zhao topped the National Society Of Film Critics vote at the weekend and is gathering impressive momentum during awards season and prevailed in a category where women directed every nominee.

In a strong night for British talent Riz Ahmed won best actor for Sound Of Metal, Kingsley Ben-Adir of One Night In Miami emerged victorious in the Breakthrough Actor contest, and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You won Breakthrough Series – Short Format (under 40 minutes).

Nicole Beharie was named best actress for Miss Juneteenth, and the screenplay prize was split between Radha Blank for The Forty-Year-Old Version and Dan Sallitt for Fourteen.

Fernanda Valadez’s Identifying Features (Mexico) was named best international feature, while A Thousand Cuts by Ramona Diaz and Garrett Bradley’s Time shared documentary honours.

Andrew Patterson won the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director award for his sci-fi mystery The Vast Of Night, which has consistently drawn praise since it premiered in Slamdance two years ago.

Kelly Reichardt’s period drama First Cow emerged without a single prize after starting the night on the most nominations – four – for best feature, screenplay, best actor, and breakthrough actor.

The late Chadwick Boseman was honoured with a posthumous Gothams Actor Tribute, and his fellow Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Viola Davis received the Actress Tribute.

Jeffrey Wright accepted the 2020 “Made in NY” Award from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Steve McQueen received the director tribute, and Ryan Murphy received the industry tribute.

The prizes were announced at a virtual ceremony from Cipriani Wall Street in New York.

Last week IFP rebranded as The Gotham Film & Media Institute, or The Gotham.
