Australian sales outfit Odin’s Eye Entertainment has snapped up international rights to hit Danish film Out Of The Darkness, a family saga set in Denmark during World War 2.
Directed by Anders Refn, the film opened at number one in Denmark in April via Scanbox Entertainment, and has posted 110,000 admissions to date. It is the sequel to Refn’s 2020 film Into The Darkness, also handled by Odin’s Eye and released in the US by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
The new film is produced by Lene Borglum’s Space Rocket Nation and stars veteran Danish actor Jesper Christensen wiith Bodil Jørgensen and Mads Reuther. It follows a Danish family who are gradually ripped apart as the pressures of collaboration and resistance collide and covers the years from 1943 to 1945.
“It is sad to see that we once more must face the darkness of war in Europe,” said Refn. “It is more relevant than ever to discuss the dilemmas of survival and resistance. We must protect our democracy and freedom against the dark forces of fascism.”
Refn is an editor as well as a director with credits including Lars Von Trier’s Breaking The Waves and Nymphomaniac.
Cannes slate
Out Of The Darkness tales its place on the Cannes slate of Odin’s Eye alongside further new titles including the Australian action-thriller Fear Below, directed by Matthew Holmes and pitched as “Jaws meets Peaky Blinders” and animated feature The Alebrijes, produced by Aron Warner and directed by prolific Mexican brothers, Gabriel Riva Palacio and Rodolfo Riva Palacio. The latter is about a 12-year-old boy, who suffers under the strict upbringing of a cruel orphanage director until he summons his guardian je to help him find the perfect family.
