Abner Benaim’s Panamanian drama Plaza Catedral has become the final 2022 Oscar shortlisted international feature contender to get US distribution following a North American deal with Samuel Goldwyn Films.
The film premiered at Guadalajara International Film Festival in October last year and won the MEXCAL awards for best actress and best actor. It won the audience award at the International Film Festival of Panama in December.
Plaza Catedral centres on Alicia, a mother in mourning who lives an isolated life in the old quarter of Panama City when an injured teenager who works on the street begs her for help. Benaim produced with Rubén Sierra Salles and Matthias Ehrenberg.
Samuel Goldwyn Films negotiated the deal with Danny Diamond’s Luminosity Entertainment and Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures, who jointly handle worldwide sales.
Recently Samuel Goldwyn Films snapped up North American rights to the shortlisted Bhutanese Oscar submission Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom, which Films Boutique represents for international sales.
Academy nominations voting runs January 27-February 1 ahead of the nominations announcement ton February 8.
