Buoyed by the strong reception at TIFF for Sanaa Lathan’s feature directorial debut On The Come Up, Paramount has set a limited theatrical release to go day-and-date with the streaming debut on Paramount+ on September 23.
The drama will open across the top 50 US markets while the platform launch will take place in the US, Canada and Italy, with further international markets to follow later this year, Paramount announced on Monday (September 12).
On The Come Up premiered in Toronto on September 8 and is based on the novel by Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) about a gifted 16-year-old rapper who tries to do right by the legacy of her hip-hop legend father and must wrestle with the false persona that the industry wants to impose upon her.
Jamila C. Gray stars alongside Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Lil Yachty, Mike Epps, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Justin Martin, Titus Makin, Michael Cooper Jr., GaTa, Lathan and Cliff “Method Man” Smith.
George Tillman Jr., Robert Teitel, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner, Angie Thomas and Timothy M. Bourne served as producers on the State Street Pictures and Temple Hill production. John Fischer is executive producer.
Paramount Pictures president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said “viewers will see what we already know: that this is an exceptional film, not to be missed’.”
On The Come Up is presented by Paramount+ in association with Paramount Pictures’ Players label.
