Paramount showed 20 minutes of Tom Cruise tentpole Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One to CinemaCon on Thursday and has moved up the US release by two days to July 12, giving the action thriller a five-day opening weekend runway.
While Cruise himself did not attend the presentation at the Colosseum in Caesar’s Palace, the Rome-set sequence got an excitable response from the crowd of exhibitors as Hayley Atwell’s character gets out of a tricky arrest and meets up with Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise throughout the 27-year, $3.6bn global franchise.
They tear around the city in various cars as an enemy in a helicopter give chase from above while the villain played by Esai Morales lurks in the background.
“Tom and McQ have kind of done it again,” said Paramount president of distribution Chris Aronson, who a year ago showed the convention the entire Top Gun: Maverick, which went on to gross $1.5bn worldwide and finished 2022 as the highest release in North America on $718.7m.
Christopher McQuarrie directs and wrote Paramount and Skydance’s latest instalment in the spy action franchise, which stars Cruise, Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Morales, among others.
