Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite leads the nominations for this year’s Asian Film Awards (AFA) – hosted by Busan International Film Festival and the first to be held outside of Hong Kong and Macau – with ten nominations including best film and best director.
The Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA), comprising the Hong Kong, Tokyo and Busan international film festivals, announced during last year’s Busan that the 14th AFA ceremony would be held in the South Korean city this year. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisers have decided to hold an online video announcement of winners, instead of a live event, on October 14.
The pre-recorded announcement including winners’ acceptance speeches will be broadcast on the AFAA YouTube channel in English. (Subtitled versions will be available from November.)
Parasite’s ten nominations also include best supporting actor for Choi Woo-shik and best supporting actress for Lee Jung-eun. The Oscar-winning Korean film was followed by So Long, My Son, directed by China’s Wang Xiaoshuai, and A Sun, directed by Taiwan’s Chung Mong-hong, both nominated in seven categories (see below for full list).
It is as yet uncertain whether BIFF will be holding any physical event at all. The festival is to have a board meeting September 11 after which plans for its 25th edition will be announced.
Commenting on the Asian Film Awards, BIFF chairman Lee Yong-kwan said: “We are delighted to host the prestigious Asian Film Awards in Busan, Asia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Film. AFA14 sees its most intense competition in years since the nominees were drawn from all Asian films in 2019 and the first half of 2020. A total of 39 films from 11 countries and regions are nominated for awards. Despite limitations due to the global pandemic, we anticipate sharing the joyful moments with all award winners.”
Wilfred Wong, chairman of AFAA and the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, said: “This year, AFAA has taken a ground-breaking step to relocate the AFA14 award presentation to Busan. Though we are facing unprecedented challenges brought by the global coronavirus outbreak, we continue to do our best to connect everyone and express our commitment towards the Asian film industry.”
