South Korean filmmaker Bong also picked up director of the year, a category that also included Pedro Almodóvar, Sam Mendes, Céline Sciamma and Martin Scorsese.
Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir won two awards, for British/Irish film of the year and young British/Irish performer of the year Honor Swinton Byrne.
Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story also picked up two awards: one for Baumbach as screenwriter and the other for supporting actress Laura Dern.
Dern was one of four American stars to sweep the top acting categories, with Renée Zellweger named best actress for her performance as Judy Garland in Judy; while Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for Joker and The Irishman‘s Joe Pesci won the supporting actor prize.
In the British/Irish acting categories, two stars were honoured for their body of work in 2019. Florence Pugh was recognised for her performances in Midsommar, Little Women and Fighting With My Family, while Robert Pattinson was honoured for his roles in The Lighthouse, High Life and The King.
French auteur Céline Sciamma won the foreign language film of the year prize for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, while Syrian journalist-turned-filmmaker Waad Al-Kateab and co-director Edward Watts picked up the documentary award with For Sama.
Filmmaker Sally Potter was present at the ceremony to accept the Dilys Powell Award for excellence in film, presented by Elle Fanning. Potter received the award jointly with costume designer Sandy Powell, nearly three decades after their Oscar-nominated collaboration on Orlando.
A third special presentation, in honour of the awards’ 40th anniversary, was made to British animation studio Aardman, whose Shaun The Sheep: Farmageddon is up for best animation at the Baftas this Sunday.
Sally Phillips hosted the awards, which took place at London’s May Fair Hotel. Last year’s winner of the best film prize was ROMA.
