Netflix duo Passing and The Lost Daughter lead the 2021 Gotham Awards nominations with five apiece and will contest the best feature category alongside A24’s The Green Knight, Neon’s Pig and Kino Lorber’s Test Pattern.
Passing is also in the running for Rebecca Hall for screenplay and the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award, while Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga are nominated in the gender-neutral lead and supporting performance categories.
Apple’s CODA and A24’s Red Rocket earned three nods each. CODA’s Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin Marlee Matlin are nominated for supporting performance and Emilia Jones for breakthrough performance while Red Rocket is recognised for Sean Baker & Chris Bergoch’s screenplay and Simon Rex’s lead performance. A24’s The Green Knight landed two nods for feature and David Lowery’s screenplay.
In the international category the nominees are Andreas Fontana’s Argentina-set Azor (Mubi), Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car from Japan (Sideshow and Janus Films), Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir Part II (A24), Julia Ducournau’s French Palme d’Or winner Titane (Neon), Alexandre Koberidze’s Georgia-set What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? (Mubi), and Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person In The World (Neon). Drive My Car and Titane are their countries’ Oscar submissions.
Due to the Gothams budget cap of $35m films like The French Dispatch, The Tragedy Of Macbeth, King Richard, The Eyes Of Tammy Faye, Power Of The Dog, Don’t Look Up, tick, tick… Boom!, The Unforgivable and The Harder They Fall were ineligible.
The 31st annual IFP Gotham Awards ceremony will take place on November 29 at Cipriani Wall Street. A previouly announced Jane Campion will receivee the Director’s Tribute, Spencer star Kristen Stewart will receive the Performer Tribute, Magnolia Pictures head Eamonn Bowles the Industry Tribute, and the cast of The Harder They Fall the Ensemble Tribute.
