Picture Tree International has boarded international sales for Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Painter, with the Downfall director collaborating with visual artist Albert Oehlen on the ’docufiction’ project.
Ben Becker (Brother Of Sleep, Comedian Harmonists) stars and Charlotte Rampling lends her voice to the film. Becker will play Oehlen, improvising and re-creating a painting that Oehlen himself will paint in the background.
The film is currently in post and Picture Tree will present a first trailer during the hybrid market in Toronto.
Hirschbiegel and Oehlen are long-time friends and collaborators who both studied at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Hamburg. Oehlen is one of the world’s top-selling artists globally.
DJ Gudrun Gut, of Malaria, Matador and Ocean Club, creates the film’s music.
Mike Downey is executive producing and said the film is “fascinating, challenging, diverting, unsettling and insightful.”
Picture Tree’s slate also includes Raúl López Echeverría’s Domingo (TIFF Industry Selects), Andreas Schmied’s Chasing The Line (which will world premiere in Zurich) and Marcus H. Rosenmüller and Santiago López Jover’s Welcome To Siegheilkirchen.
