Spanish thriller Piggy, the feature fiction debut of Spanish TV drama veteran Carlota Pereda, was the big winner at UK horror, sci-fi and fantasy festival Grimmfest.
The Manchester festival awarded Piggy with the best director, best film and best actress prizes, with Laura Galán scooping the win for best actress.
Piggy expands on Pereda’s 2018 short of the same name about a teenager – played by Galán – who is mercilessly bullied about her weight until, from the confines of her family’s butcher shop, she has an unexpected chance to exact revenge on her bullies.
It premiered at Sundance, before enjoying a festival run including San Sebastian, Fantastic Fest and Sitges.
The film is produced by Morena Films in co-production with France’s Backup Studio. Paris-based Charades handles international sales, with Vertigo Releasing distributing in the UK and Ireland. Magnolia has taken US rights.
The 14th edition of Grimmfest ran from October 6-9.
