Remember The Titans screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard (pictured( has boarded a biopic about 1970s American football legend Marlin Briscoe.
Howard will write the script for the tentatively titled The Magician, about the sport’s first African American starting quarterback whose on-field exploits earned him the nickname ‘The Magician’.
It is understood the story will chart Briscoe’s rise from lowly draft pick to a key member of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, his ensuing drug addiction and imprisonment, and ultimate redemption.
West Omaha Films, founded by actor John Beasley with David B Clark, and Terry Hanna, is producing the film in association with Leigh Steinberg and Leigh Steinberg Sports & Entertainment, who will consult in the production and marketing.
“I think this is a wonderful story of triumph over adversity,” Howard said. “It’s not the usual sports story, and I’m old enough to know the significance of what Marlin did. To be the first in anything is challenging. To be the first starting black quarterback, the thinking position, has real significance.”
Howard is represented by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment and his credits include Ali.
